Fishing in The Middle Keys is a very popular past time, and the provides the livelihood for many of our residents. The variety of ecosystems here is unsurpassed.
As with every location, fishing is best when you target fish in season.
The Silver King-Tarpon are most active in the spring and early summer. You can find Tarpon under bridges and docks along every key. There are some locations where you can hand feed wild Tarpon… just watch your fingers!
Florida Bay is a sea of grass! The grass not only provides a nursery for marine life to grow, but offers habitat suitable for hooking up Sea Trout, Snook, Redfish, Permit, Tarpon, and Bonefish.
Shark fishing in Florida Bay is always fun and exciting! Hook up a Spinner shark and it will launch itself out of the water! Hooking up (and releasing) a small shark, typically 4-6 foot, on light tackle can be the highlight of your trip.
If you choose deep sea offshore fishing, when trolling the Gulf Stream you have an excellent chance of hooking Sailfish, Mahi-Mahi, Tuna, Wahoo, and many more. If you go the distance, the Marathon West Hump is 22 miles offshore. Rising up from the 1100 foot deep sea floor is an underwater hump to 480 feet. This geologic feature creates an area where larger pelagic sport fish come to feed. Species caught here include Blue and White Marlin, Mako Sharks, Blackfin Tuna, Sailfish, and an occasional Broadbill Swordfish.
The larger reefs in the keys chain are preservation areas where fish are safe to live and breed. The adjacent smaller reefs benefit from this when the fish move from reef to reef. There are plenty of smaller patch reefs where catching fish is permitted. Anglers reef fishing will catch a variety of Groupers, Snappers, Jacks and Mackerel.
Within the span of just a few miles you can be back bay fishing the grass flats, bottom fishing for grouper, or trolling in the Gulf Stream. whether you choose to bring your own boat, rent from one of the many rental companies, or hire a guide to put you on the fish, the Middle Keys will not disappoint you!
