The 7 Mile Bridge Run is an annual race over the 7 Mile Bridge which connects Marathon, Florida with the Lower Keys of The Florida Keys
The first race was in 1982 when a group of Marathon runners ran over the newly built 7 mile bridge before it was opened by the DOT for vehicle traffic. The first Race Director was Diane Chaplin.
The 7 Mile Bridge Run is the only major race in the U.S. which has water on both sides throughout the entire race. The distance of the race is 6.8 miles, and is closed off to only 1,500 runners each year. Anyone wishing to enter the race has less than 15 minutes to register as soon as registration opens each year because of the high demand of runners wanting to be part of history.
“Beating the Bus” is a feature length movie with a cast of racers, volunteers, sponsors, and race directors/organizers involved in the race over the last 40 years. There are over 100 residents of the Middle Keys who are in the cast.
